Mysterious Rocky Hills Latmos

written by: Özcan ATAR

When I learned about the places we were going to explore for the project and I realized that as one who was born and raised in Aydin, I had never heard of these places before. Later on when I started to collect information about Latmos, the lack of resources showed that I was not alone. In my research about Latmos, I asked people if they had heard about the Latmos before and unfortunately no one in the groups knew about it. When we started this project, I knew that my task  would be very difficult in terms of finding all necessary information. Throughout the project duration, raising  awareness of people and make people care about the place they live has motivated me most. We all come into this world and as a person, leaving  a mark on popla by giving them a little information about my local community specialty made me very happy. I’m proud to be involved in this project.

Now let me give you short information about Latmos. I have to say that this was the most satisfying  part of doing this project, telling people about Latmos .The more people I met who had never heard about Latmos, the more I felt proud of myself for doing  this meaningful job for the project.

First of all, I’d like to talk about location of Latmos. Latmos is in the west of Turkey, the area between Aydin and Mugla Provinces. It is also known as mountains of five fingers.

Let’s continue with the historical background of this region. The place we call Latmos is an ancient city. Outstanding  features of this ancient sites are 8000-year-old drawings on the wall of rocks, monastery of  the 7s and Heracleia.

On the one hand, human silhouettes on these 8,000-year-old rocks show that people are settled in this region and started building a family life. Unfortunately, these rocks were damaged, broken and destroyed over time piece by piece. Now disappearing pigments of the newly preserved stones are photographed by completing  them digitally with infrared cameras. At the same time, a 1,000-year-old piece of ceramic thought to belong to a dog was found in this area.

On the other hand, the monastery of the 7s, is a place where people from different societies took shelter in these mountains  in the 19th century. Later, a monastery life was established here and a church was built. Nowadays, if you visit the monastery, you will see the pictures of Jesus Christ on the walls of a place resembling a cave. Even though they started to fall apart, you can’t believe that such amazing things have been done in those years.

Heracleia was again a region where communities took  shelter in from oppression, and a city was built here between 300-400 BC. The name Heracleia was taken from a character in Greek mythology of the period. Over the centuries, many communities have come to this area and have lived there.

We hope that the beauty and history of Latmos will continue to be explored. Latmos has the same value as Gobeklitepe Temple in terms of time period. But unfortunately  the region is almost forgotten and destroyed in a remote corner. Perhaps in the future, who knows, we can learn where these people came from, their ancestors, culture, old technologies and the findings of the past might be the guide to the future to us.
